After the Rush

Picture
Chilkoot Pass was a major hurdle for prospectors headed for the Klondike gold fields in the 1890's.  As more prospectors chose this route to the gold fields, enterprizing outfitters set up a variety of businesses to haul supplies.  While hiking the 33-mile Chilkoot Trail from Dyea, Alaska to Lake Bennett, British Columbia, we came upon the remains of this abandoned freight wagon in the snow above the pass. Below the Glacier

As we forded a river below Halo Glacier in Katmai National Park, Alaska, a female brown bear and her cub approached us, apparently seeking protection from an aggressive male bear.  As they departed, the cub turned and gave us a final glance before continuing on.  Click here to see detail from a 4" x 4" section of the painting, or here for the rest of the story and photos of these bears.

Elk in a Snowstorm

I enjoy watching wildlife in any weather, but there's nothing more relaxing for me than painting a powerful animal curled up and resting in a gentle spring snow.   That's something special about living in Alaska too.

The coastal brown (grizzly) bears know when the red salmon return to the Brooks River in Alaska's Katmai National Park. By early September they are patroling the river banks and waiting below Brooks Falls to make their catch. Click here to see detail from a 4" x 4" section of the painting.

A family of Alaskan musk ox cluster together to confront an approaching figure.  It's a special treat for me to see a herd or even a solitary musk ox in the wild when visiting Bering Land Bridge National Preserve.   The Alaska Wildlife Conservation Center also provides wildlife viewing opportunities in a natural environment close to Anchorage, Alaska.    Click here to see detail from a 4" x 4" section of the painting.

Three Mines Below Castle Mountain

Picture
Alaska's Kennecott Mine worked the worlds richest copper deposits from about 1904 to 1939. This September view over the gravel strewn surface of the Kennicott Glacier in Wrangell-St. Elias National Park and Preserve, shows fall colors and three mines below Castle Mountain.  The Kennecott Mill complex is among the red buildings.  The Banjo Mine was built on the large glacier in the top center of the painting.  Cable tramways connected the mines with the mill below.  I made two week-long trips to the park during 2010, spending several days exploring historic areas and camping in the backcountry.  During the first trip in June, the top of the mountain was visible.  My second trip was in autumn, when the clouds were lower, but the fall colors were turning.  Click here to see detail from a 4" x 4" section of the painting.

A young lady performs a traditional dance as the sun sets over the Pacific Ocean.  To accurately depict the beautiful scene that I witnessed was a real challenge, but I'm very pleased with the final work.  Click here to see detail from a 4" x 4" section of the painting, and a photograph of the sunset that inspired this painting.

Where is the Ice Going?

Picture
The inspiration for this painting was an Alaska Native family that I encountered during a spring walk along the beach in front of the Inupiat Heritage Center and near the Barrow Environmental Observatory in Barrow, Alaska. The father was gazing at his infant child bundled in his wife's parka.  Their daughter looked directly at me, as if to ask a question.  The man's coat was white, as is traditional for whalers and other hunters on sea ice who need to blend into their environment.  The Arctic sea ice is melting fast, and the ocean is now reclaiming much of the land on which Barrow and several other villages were built.  Rapid environmental change also portends changes to traditional lifestyles. Thin ice and open water conspire to make the life of a marine hunter more difficult and dangerous than ever.   Click here to see detail from a 4" x 4" section of the painting and a photograph of spring sea ice off Barrow.
