Portrait and Figure Paintings by Robert Winfree
Angela's Dance
Angela's Dance was inspired by a dance performance that we attended in Buenos Aires, Argentina. When the curtain rose, we could see the silhouettes of two male dancers in formal wear. The angelic form of the female dancer arose in an eruption of colored smoke from below stage, and I knew this was an image that I would want to paint.

By Starlight
By Starlight was painstakingly completed with 22 hues of paint, successive layers of brush-spatter pointillism and glaze. This image was inspired by Greek mythology of Asteria the goddess of astrology entering the sea. Click here to see detail from a 4" x 4" section of the painting.

Casting the Net
I encountered this castnet fisherman on the coast of Maui, on the same beach where I found the subject for my painting Watching the Sunset. The fisherman moved to a vantage spot directly in front of me and posed nearly motionless for perhaps thirty minutes, scanning the water. Before leaving, he explained to me that he had been watching for fish to pass in the surf below his rock, but they did not come for him today. Dancer at Rest II
This painting was inspired by performances of the Russian Native dance group "Sunshine" from Novo Chaplino, Chukotka, who performed at the Beringia Days Conference in Nome, Alaska. They helped finance their trip with their hand-made jewelry, including the beaded headress that I pictured in the painting. Click here for a close up view.

Twilight Dancer
A young lady performs a traditional dance as the sun sets over the Pacific Ocean. To accurately depict the beautiful scene that I witnessed was a real challenge, but I'm very pleased with the final work. Watching the Sunset
It's not easy to paint a convincing sunset, but I go at it the same way as for most of my other paintings. I take lots of reference photos and refer to them as I sketch and block in the rough painting. If all goes well, about halfway into the painting the canvas takes on a life of its own and shows me how to finish the scene, as it did for this painting. I generally work a landscape or seascape from the top to the bottom (from the back to the front of the scene), using opaque paints for the bottom layers and transparent glazes to brighten and unify the top layers. I strive for authenticity in my subjects and colors, referring to candid photos of the people and wildlife that I encounter on location. I generally cover the canvas about four or five times, starting with an undercoat to set the overall tone and block in the major shapes, and then finishing with several more layers with progressively more detail; stopping when the painting tells me that it's done.
